US President Donald Trump on Friday declared a national emergency to deal with the coronavirus contagion, a move that will allow US states to tap crucial federal funds to deal with surging infections.
“To unleash the full power of the federal government to this effort, today I am officially declaring a national emergency,” Trump said in a press conference at the White House Rose Garden.
The move grants state and other local authorities the power to access US$50 billion in funds, the president said.
He said he was also granting emergency powers to Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar to allow him to expedite approval of telehealth systems.
